Earthquake Kits

🧰 What’s Inside “The Ark III” Emergency Kit — and Why It Matters

When a natural disaster strikes — whether it’s an earthquake, typhoon, flood, or blackout — help may not arrive right away. That’s why every household needs a basic survival kit on hand. One popular option in Japan is “The Ark III” (アーク・スリー), a compact emergency preparedness kit designed to support one person for up to three days.

We have this kit in our home supplies, and I wanted to share what’s inside and how it fits into our overall disaster readiness plan.

🌟 What Is “The Ark III”?

The Ark III is an all-in-one survival set produced in Japan. It’s commonly stocked by schools, companies, and municipalities across the country. The concept is simple: if disaster hits and you’re on your own for a few days, this box helps you stay nourished, hydrated, warm, and organized — at least until help arrives or you can evacuate safely.

It comes in a compact box, easy to store in a closet, under the bed, or in a backpack. It’s designed for one person, for three days, based on the Japanese government’s guidelines for post-disaster self-sufficiency.

📦 What’s Inside the Box?

Here’s a breakdown of what you’ll find in The Ark III kit:

🍪 1. Emergency Food (非常用食品)

  • Caloric content: ~3,600 kcal total (enough for 3 days)
  • Comes as three energy bars (1,200 kcal each)
  • Shelf-stable for 5 years
  • Tastes neutral and is designed to be eaten without heating or cooking
  • Safe for children and adults alike

💧 2. Emergency Drinking Water (非常用飲料水)

  • Includes six sealed pouches of purified water (125 ml × 6 = 750 ml)
  • Packaged for long-term storage (5 years), with resistance to freezing and heat
  • Note: While it’s enough to prevent dehydration, this is only half the recommended daily amount — so it’s smart to store extra water at home

🛏️ 3. Emergency Blanket (ブランケット)

  • Lightweight, foldable foil blanket (132 cm × 210 cm)
  • Reflects body heat and retains warmth in cold conditions
  • Windproof and water-resistant
  • A must-have in case of power outages or being outdoors at night

🧻 4. Storage Bags (保存用袋)

  • Two large water-resistant plastic bags
  • Can be used for waste, carrying items, or makeshift rain protection
  • These may seem simple, but they’re incredibly useful in emergencies

🔎 Additional Details

  • Expiration date is clearly marked (in our case currently, October 2025)
  • The kit is suitable for families, workplaces, and even kids’ school bags
  • Lightweight enough to carry easily during an evacuation
  • Shelf-stable between -30°C and 65°C — meaning you can store it almost anywhere in Japan

🧠 Why We Chose This Kit

We live in Japan — a beautiful but earthquake-prone country. After every large quake or typhoon, we’re reminded how quickly everyday comforts can vanish: no lights, no water, no gas, no access to food. The first 72 hours after a disaster are often the most critical, and that’s exactly what this kit is designed for.

What I like about The Ark III is that it’s simple, reliable, and requires no preparation or tools to use. You just open the box, and you’re ready to go.
